Circle Plus
For this summer only Circle in the Square Theatre School is thrilled to announce our Circle Plus program – an alternative to our traditional Summer Intensive. Circle Plus is an à la carte collection of classes designed to allow our community to affordably dip their toes back into the artistic world, while experiencing some of our new faculty and curriculum offerings.
After faculty compensation, all profits from these classes will be used to fund student scholarships for the 2021-22 school year. By participating in Circle Plus, you will directly contribute to the growth of the artists of tomorrow!
All class offerings, descriptions, faculty bios and sign up information are listed below. A note, in compliance with Covid safety guidelines, all in-person classes will be capped based on studio space. Additionally, all in-person students must show proof of vaccination. For the majority of classes a Zoom option is also available.

About the Class: This class will introduce students to BIPOC playwrights that they may not be familiar with. Students will do research on the playwright, learn to discuss the plays with a critical, curious, and empathetic eye, and work monologues from the plays. The goal is that students who don’t necessarily fit the playwright’s racial, ethnic, or sexual (to name a few) identity realize that they can still support BIPOC playwrights and identify with the work they create. We will read 4 plays in the course of the month and each student will have a monologue by the end of the course that they can use in their auditions moving forward.
About the Teacher: Nemuna Ceesay (she/her/hers) is an actor originally from California and based in New York. She has an MFA in acting from American Conservatory Theater and has been seen onstage at CalShakes, Joe’s Pub, PlayMakers Rep, Woolly Mammoth, A.R.T., The Public, and spent 2 years at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Favorite TV credits include: Bull, Broad City, Instinct, Younger, FBI, Prodigal Son and Katy Keene. She has performed internationally at Theatre Calgary and the Moscow Art Theatre. Nemuna has been teaching for many years and currently teaches at Hunter College, Circle in the Square Theatre School, and Long Island University. She is dedicated to advocating for equity, diversity and inclusion in the type of work presented at these and all institutions. She has recently created an all BIPOC training program called The Blueprint in an effort to change the landscape of actor training in this country–centering BIPOC voices and making training more accessible to students of color. Nemuna also has her own business coaching actors for MFA Auditions. Follow her on Instagram @_nemuna_ and visit her website at www.nemunarceesay.com. About the Class: We’ll cover the fundamental underlying techniques and skills to solve storytelling problems in presenting theatrical violence in ways that are collaborative and repeatable. Even when a fight director will be in the mix, developing a sense of what works well on your body, and having familiarity with what techniques might be asked if you is crucial. More that that, how can a punch or a slap best serve your character and your scene? We’ll explore techniques as building blocks for storytelling and acting choices, leaving you with another acting language for crafting clear, powerful performances.
About the Teacher: Dan Renkin is a NYC-based fight director and stage combat instructor. Based out of Circle in the Square, where he has taught since 1998, he is also current faculty or past guest instructor at American Academy of Dramatic Arts, New York Film Academy’s Professional Conservatory of Musical Theatre, Five Towns College, HB Studio, Cap21, Strasberg and the Juilliard School. He has waged fights using everything from mops to entire wheelchairs to axes from East Side blackbox spaces to 59E59; from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera to the the soundstages of As The World Turns. He worked on Broadway on the sparkling CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG assisting Tony-recipient B.H. Barry, and he is one of the select former students to be founding members of Barry’s American Association of Fight Directors. Also a Broadway World Award nominated actor, Dan teaches how to approach stage combat from the point-of-view of an actor’s craft: how these techniques allow clear and specific storytelling, repeatable under the stresses of performance: what does the audience need to see? His choreography for SUPERIOR DONUTS performed by the incarcerated artists of Rehabilitation Through the Arts received the high compliment “best fight in the history of Sing Sing!”Reserve your spot by emailing: Summer@circlesquare.org |

Six Week Course – This six-week online ballet class is an opportunity for students to further their training in the art of ballet. It is intended for all levels, actors, singers, and dancers. Students will kinesthetically learn the mechanics of ballet. Lots of individual attention will be given. In each lesson we will work our way through the progression of a ballet class, from pliés to allegro. This course is for anyone interested in moving outside of their comfort zone, exploring movement that can release unnecessary tension and open up new forms of physical expression.
