We realize that some people providing letters of recommendation will feel more comfortable mailing the letter directly to us. As long as your name is clearly stated in the letter, we will be able to match it to your application materials.

Can I audition by videotape or dvd? We can only accept taped auditions for the Summer Workshops. Applicants for the Two Year Workshops must audition in person either in New York or at one of our national audition cities. Admission to the Two Year Workshops is highly selective. We are better able to make a decision on your admission by seeing your work in person and getting to know you through the interview.

Video auditions must follow the same criteria as in-person auditions: You have 5 minutes for two monologues (one classical, preferrably Shakespeare, and one contemporary) and if you are singing, you have additional time for your song.

All video auditions must be clear to view and easy to hear. Please choose a place to film where there is good lighting and little ambient noise. Also, please choose a location where the background is not distracting.

Please be sure to send the following information in the email with your YouTube links (or in the packet accompanying your dvd):

  1. Your Name
  2. The name of the play, playwright, character for each of your monologues
  3. If you are singing, please give the name of the song and the musical it is from.
  4. Please mention whether you've already submitted your application or whether we should expect it soon. We will not view your video audition until we have the completed application and application fee.

How to create and share an unlisted (private) video audition on YouTube:

  • Sign into your YouTube Account.
  • Click on your account name located in the top right of any page.
  • Click on My Videos from the expanded menu.
  • Choose the video you want to edit and click the Edit button below the video thumbnail.
  • Scroll down to the Broadcasting and Sharing Options and find the Privacy section. You'll see the option to make the video Public, Unlisted, or Private. Select Unlisted.
  • Make sure to click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the page.
  • Once you’ve set your video as unlisted in your Account settings, you’re ready to share your video. In order to share your video, just send the video’s URL to the people with whom you’d like to have access to the video. They’ll then be able to view the video.

How long will it take for me to find out if I am accepted? Only after you have completed your audition and we have recieved all your application materials can we make a decision on your admission. This usually takes anywhere from a week to a month or more depending on where we are in the audition process. Our rolling admission process allows us to inform you of our decision as expeditiously as possible.

Where do I go for my audition? If you are auditioning at one of our national auditions, you will be informed of the audition location once you have been scheduled for an appointment.

If you are auditioning in New York, you will be coming to Circle in the Square Theatre School. We are located at 1633 Broadway New York, NY 10019 and the entrance to the theatre is on the 50th Street side of the building between Broadway and 8th Avenue. Look for the Circle in the Square box office which is located in the breezeway, directly next door to the Wicked box office. Enter through the box office and go down two flights to the lower lobby where the restrooms are. The school office is located on the right.

In the event that the box office is locked, enter through the revolving door on the 50th street side of Paramount Plaza, the office building the theatre is attached to. You will need to tell the security guard that you are there for an audition at Circle in the Square, and they will call down to our office to verify that we are expecting you. Once you have been admitted to the building, take the elevator to the left of the security desk down to the "C" level. When you come out of the elevator, make a right and you will see a door labeled "Paramount Plaza Building Office". The doors to the theatre are just past the building office and have a small sign on them that says Circle in the Square. Once inside, go down one flight to the lower lobby where the restrooms are. The school office is located on the right.

Who will be in my audition? If you are auditioning in New York, the Theatre School Director, Colin O'Leary will most likely be in the audition. Sometimes Mr. O'Leary is joined by additional administrators.

If you are auditioning at one of our national auditions, a local Circle in the Square representative will be in the audition. These representatives are typically people who have been adjudicating for us for years and frequently are former members of our faculty.

Can I get feedback on my audition? All applicants will be notified through the mail regarding admission to the programs. We are sorry but we cannot provide audition evaluations or personalized feedback for applicants.

Will there be an accompanist at my audition? No. You must provide accompaniment on tape or cd and we will provide a tape or cd player for you to use. A cappella auditions are discouraged, as it is more difficult to hear your sense of pitch.

Can I be considered for both the Musical and the Professional Workshops? What about for the summer program too? Yes. At the top of your application, you can check all the programs you would like to be considered for. This way, we know if you would be interested in attending the Summer Workshop if you are not accepted into the Two Year Workshop. If you are accepted into the Summer Workshop but were waitlisted for the Two Year Workshop, we will make a decision on your admission for the fall based on an evaluation of your work during the summer.

If I attend the Summer Workshop, can I be admitted into the Two Year Workshop in the fall? If you attend the Summer Workshop and would like to be considered for the fall, please let Colin O’Leary (Director of the School) know as soon as possible after the start of the program. You will also need to mention to each of your teachers that you would like to be considered so that they can evaluate your work in class with that in mind.
